The growth of non-geographic numbers (NGN) has been one of the biggest stories in the telecommunications industry over the past few years. These numbers are used almost exclusively by businesses in the UK. Though there are numerous benefits, perhaps the most popular reason to sign up for an NGN is that they do not use area codes. This is important for businesses that plan to relocate but want to retain their old customer base. Since customers are far less likely to do business with companies in other regions, partly due to the phone charges, these numbers are essential. You see, when an old customer dials a non-geographic number, he is charged at the same rate as a local call. But before you contact the cheapest internet service provider, there are a few things you should know. In the end, studies have shown that customers are far more likely to dial 0800 numbers, which they immediately identify as free, than company numbers they know they’ll have to pay for, even if it is a nominal fee.
